Delicate and charming, this 19th Century Eucharist artwork is a subtle declaration of the faith and the perfect Catholic decorative piece for the right nook or bookshelf. It is based on a vintage holy card, and it shows a dove, which in those days represented souls like you and me, drinking from the Chalice of life offered by his loving friend, Jesus. There was an inscription underneath which in English reads,

From this divine drink
my heart is quenched.
It prefers this fate
to the delights of the earth.

This is a delightful picture and suggests the delights of Heaven. The Sacred Heart hovers over the scene like a flower. Below is the blue bachelor button, traditionally a symbol of love and healing. The poppies in this context suggest the Passion of Christ because of their red color. The wheat is shown in an idealized gold.

In the original card, the artwork was the centerpiece of a large paper lace doily, shown above. Paper lace like that was a new technology of the time and had a gee-whiz factor which doesn't carry forward as well into our day as the lovely, graceful artwork. Besides, birds and flowers are two of our favorite things God has put on this earth!

** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a white border around the artwork, 1/2" in the 5x7, and 1.3# in the 8.5x11.
